About the Department
The Grand Prairie Parks and Recreation Department is an award winning department with world class parks and recreation centers. The department was founded over 50 years ago, and has grown into a very large department. In 2004 the department won a Gold Medal Award from the Texas Recreation and Parks Society. In 2007 and 2008 the department was nominated by the National Recreation and Parks Association as a finalist to the National Gold Medal Award. The department has been able to grow substantially in the last 12 years, because of a ¼ cent sales tax increase for parks and recreation. The department will continue to grow and will open a new state of the art recreation facility in 2017. The mission statement for the department is “to enhance the quality of life and to create community through people, programs, places, and partnerships". Most of the facilities have their own list of goals and objective, but the overall goal for the department is to create a GRAND experience for all residents and visitors.
